I notice that the videos are made with LW in discovery mode - as in he doesn't own a LW license? Seems a little strange.
Also, since when can LW handle that many particles? I stopped using LW around 9.3 version and I remember how horrible LW's dynamic engine was. It would take forever to calculate even the most simple dynamic scenes (like a bouncing ball with soft deformations).
Also, the intense depth of field he added to the render in Nuke ruins the test in my opinion as it hides a lot of the mistakes that the renderer is making. Show us the raw render and let's see how well arnold holds up. Don't cloak it in a ton of blur.
EDIT - Nevermind. THIS answers all my questions...LW can't do that many particles!
Mandelbulb is an Arnold procedural object, it is a .dll procedural loaded and rendered at render time, particles never exist inside Layout itself, you can only see a cube with the bounding box of the procedural.
Arnold is a incredible brute force raytracer, designed for VFX and animation industry. It is very easy to setup, there is no complex parameters to adjust, only sampling level, and render always is clear without artifacts and of course doesn't need any kind of precomputation. It is fantastic
